Washington DC Upgrades Its Pay Transparency
The “Wage Transparency Omnibus Amendment Act of 2023” and its Revised Wage Transparency Law is a significant update to Washington, D.C.’s pay transparency regulations, set to take effect on June 30, 2024.
This law requires employers in D.C., regardless of size, to include the minimum and maximum salary or hourly wage in all job postings, promotions, and transfers. Additionally, employers must inform prospective employees about benefits, such as healthcare, before the first interview.
The law also prohibits the use of a candidate’s wage history in determining their pay, aiming to prevent the perpetuation of existing wage disparities. Employers are required to post notices in the workplace informing employees of their rights under this act. Violations can result in fines starting at $1,000 and increasing up to $20,000 for repeat offenses. The D.C. Attorney General is responsible for enforcing the law, with the authority to investigate violations and pursue civil actions.
This legislation is part of a broader effort to promote wage equity and transparency in the district, addressing wage gaps and ensuring fair compensation practices across all industries
